Finding quality aromatherapy information in magazines and journals can be difficult; although the topic is mentioned in several health magazines, there are not many magazines and journals that are solely devoted to the practice of aromatherapy. In addition, there is much aromatherapy information available on line but unless you know the credentials and experience of the writer, it is difficult to ascertain “good” information from “bad” information.
However, there are a few journals and magazines that offer some quality advice including Aromatherapy Today, Aromascents, The International Journal of Essential Oil Therapeutics and The International Journal of Clinical Aromatherapy. Some professional aromatherapy organizations also offer an in-house journal as part of the membership fees.
Aromatherapy Today Magazine
The Aromatherapy Today magazine is described as “an international aromatherapy journal for aromatherapists, natural therapists, nurses and health care workers.” It is a print magazine that has been in circulation for 12 years.
Although it is based in Australia, Aromatherapy Today provides information on essential oil profiles, articles, research and events to a worldwide audience. Three issues are published per year and start at approximately US$38 for Australian subscriptions and rise to approximately US$50 for subscriptions in the United States and Canada.
Aromascents Journal Ezine
Aromascents is a Canadian publication that recently transformed from a print magazine to an on line ezine. Aromascents has been published for seven years and contains information in the form of articles and research updates. The quarterly on line version of Aromascents is free to subscribers.
Professional Aromatherapy Journals
Both The International Journal of Clinical Aromatherapy and The International Journal of Essential Oil Therapeutics offer quality information for serious therapists and students who are looking for information on research and case studies. Both journals are managed by Rhiannon and Bob Harris respectively, who are British ex-pats based in France and owners of Essential Oil Resource Consultants.
The International Journal of Clinical Aromatherapy is priced at approximately US$45 for two issues on an individual subscription; The International Journal of Essential Oil Therapeutics is priced at approximately US$82 for four issues on an individual subscription. Both journals are available for mailing worldwide.
Professional Aromatherapy Organizations and Journals
Many professional aromatherapy organizations in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia also have their own journals that are included in membership fees. Check with each organization individually as professional organizations vary. Examples include:
- National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA) – United States
- Alliance of International Aromatherapists (AIA) – United States
- Canadian Federation of Aromatherapists
- International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists – United Kingdom
- International Aromatherapy and Aromatic Medicine Association Inc – Australia.
Quality aromatherapy journals and magazines provide a reliable resource for information to therapists and students alike. Although aromatherapy journals and magazines are just a starting part for more extensive research and study in the form of books and courses, they provide some clarification of the information available.
