Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York, Samantha Jones and Miranda Hobbes have influenced many women through escapades in Sex and the City; Sex and the City 2 promises more.

There probably aren't many women who haven't heard of a T.V. series called Sex and the City. The show first aired in 1998, ran until 2004 and enjoyed phenomenal success. It broke social taboos and barriers, as the world was introduced to four New York women - Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte Yorke, Samantha Jones and Miranda Hobbes - who entertained, and sometimes shocked, followers of a never-before-seen T.V. show.

The series rose in popularity as it focused on socially relevant issues, predominately female, which other T.V. shows avoided. The success of 'Sex and the City' continues, despite the end of the long running T.V. series, with the release of Sex and the City:The Movie in 2008 and the imminent release of a second movie, Sex and the City 2 in May 2010.

The Origins of Sex and the City

The T.V. series Sex and the City is loosely based on Candace Bushnell's book Sex and the City, which in turn was compiled from her writings with the New York Observer. It is said that Carrie Bradshaw's character is based on Candace Bushnell; the book shares some similarities with the T.V. series but readers of the book will notice a difference in style and some characterizations.

The T.V. series Sex and the City was marketed as a romantic comedy but often the explicit discussions and visual performances of the characters' sexual fantasies and escapades caused controversy; however, the T.V. show also tackled serious women's issues such as breast cancer, miscarriage, single motherhood and the 'problems' associated with successful, single women, through the characterization of four central women.

How Women Identify With the Characters of Sex and the City

Many women identify with one of the four central characters in the show; women identify with not only the characteristics of the women but the problems and difficulties which they go through. Sex and the City's central characters are:

  • Carrie Bradshaw – the writer, romantic and shoe-obsessed 'fashionista'
  • Charlotte York – the socialite who believes in 'true love'
  • Samantha Jones – the successful business woman who has tried many alternative sexual trysts
  • Miranda Hobbes – the workaholic lawyer who likes to be in control.

Sex and the City 3?

Sex and the City 2 is released on May 28 2010; trailer teasers for the movie were shown in December 2009. It is rumored that Sex and the City 3 will follow Sex and the City 2; it appears that women still can't get enough of the antics of Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York.
